Cobol/Assembler Developers - Toronto/Cincinnati TekSource Canada is currently seeking ten (10) intermediate to senior Cobol resources for minimum one (1) year contracts at our Toronto client. Please read "NOTE" at bottom of job description before applying Job Summary: - Program and maintain a portfolio of On-line Cobol programs gaining a deep understanding of the program logic and business requirements behind them to allow for further enhancements. Key Responsibilities: - To rewrite the existing on-line ASSEMBLER programs in on-line COBOL - Performs interviews and other data gathering activities for preliminary study and project design - Acquire the knowledge necessary to write/support the portfolio of newly created Cobol applications both batch and on-line - Ensure the stability of the applications and systems are always functioning - Program enhancements and maintenance as required - Diagnose problem and take the corrective actions required to solve the issue - Work in collaboration with Business Analysts to answer system questions and correct system anomalies - Identify and report methods to accelerate project progress - Provide transparent progress reporting and status - Prepares production JCL for each job assigned in conjunction with the production schedules - As required, perform enhancements to existing programs - System testing and documentation Knowledge: - Good understanding of the IBM VM/VSE environment - 10-15 years on-line Cobol - 10+ Years experience with Assembler - IBM assembler language - Proficiency in VSAM file structures - Database manipulation - Proficient with JCL - Ability to analyze computer core dumps Troubleshooting skills: - Ability to identify the source of a problem and resolve it - Ability to identify issues are of technical or user nature - Other Skills (an asset): - Understanding of detailed specifications - Microsoft Office - Assembler - RPG Job-specific competencies (behaviors and skills): Problem solving and decision making (Anticipates problems, sees how a problem and its solution will affect other units, gathers information before making decision, with alternatives against objectives and arrives at a reasonable decision, is will to take action even under pressure, criticism or tight deadlines, recognizes and accurately evaluates the signs of a problem, notifies superior of problems in a timely manner) Organization skills and time management (Able to manage multiple tasks; able to determine priorities, uses goals to guide actions, adapts well to changing priorities, deadlines and direction) Education and experience: - College diploma or equivalent experience - 10-15 years on-line Cobol experience - 10+ Years experience with Assembler Attributes: - Mathematical ability - Analytical and problem solving skills - Ability to work under pressure - Willing to travel and work temporarily in Cincinnati NOTE: Please read before applying For the first half of this contract, the work will be done onsite in Cincinnati, Ohio (June 2008 to end of December 2008). The client will pay hotel, meal allowance and travel to and from Toronto. The second half of this contract beginning January 1st. 2009 will be completed onsite in Toronto.
